DECISION OF SOUTH-CENTRAL SOMALIA MEDIA

Mogadishu 24 December 2009
A consultation meetings hosted by SOCFEX was held on between 17th and 24 December 2009 at
Hotel Bikiin in Mogadishu with the aim of coordinating and strengthening the working strategies
of the media houses in South Central Somalia.
The inception of the meeting was a result of a dire need for better communication and
collaboration between the media outlets in Somalia for the reasons of both resolving current row
within the media organization that is undermining the invaluable work of the media outlets and
preventing the reoccurrences of disputes.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed the important role of the international media organizations that
support Somali media organizations. Participants raised the need for the international media
organizations to grasp fully the dynamics and the real issues that underpin the challenges facing
Somali media to ensure that they make an informed decision when dealing with Somali media
organizations.
The participants of the meetings welcomed the initiative of coordination that raised by SOCFEXand they noted that lack of collaboration and coordination will widen the gap.
The participants after lengthy debate have agreed to make the following decisions:
1. South central media stations and its journalists do not recognize NUSOJ as a legitimate
organization since it is one man organization which does not represent Somali Media and
can not speak on behalf of our names.
2. We welcome international media organizations like Press now and BBC world trust and
their efforts to assist Somali media at this critical time as we urge them to consult with the
concerning parties.
3. To organize a national conference for the Somali media organizations to discuss
coordination and jointing efforts towards establishment of acceptable union to all
journalists and media people.
4. To cooperate and adapt common position to unite their voices and show solidarity to those
who interest helping Somali media and urge international media organizations that support
Somali media organizations to cease siding with one Somali media organization against
others.
5. Call upon the international media organizations to coordinate their support to Somali
media organization for the interest of fairness.
As the result of our discussions, South Central Media stations and journalists have set up joint
committee which will represent media stations and journalists in South Central regions and will
organize national conference to establish Union for Somali media and journalists.
The elected committee is the following:
1. Abdulkadir Jirow Sharmarke
